Are you turning 65 this year? Prepare early so you can celebrate later

There’s a lot to do when you’re turning 65, but switching to Medicare doesn’t have to be so taxing. Broker Source helps you be proactive, so your birthday is about celebrating you, not dealing with Medicare enrollment. Here’s everything you need to know, and do, to be prepared for Medicare enrollment.

Think ahead
Generally, Medicare enrollment begins three months before you turn 65 and ends three months after your birthday. While this guideline is not applicable for everyone, late enrollments could incur a Part B late enrollment fee, so it’s important to learn which deadlines apply to you. Your enrollment period could vary, depending on your eligibility, age and type of Medicare coverage. With all these moving parts, Broker Source has enrollment specialists available to clarify your specific deadlines in one quick call to make sure you never miss a beat.

Learn the parts and pieces
There are five types of Medicare: Medicare Part A, Medicare Part B, Original Medicare, Medicare Part C and Medicare Part D. It’s important to understand what each plan type offers so you can make the best decision for your needs.
Medicare Part A is considered hospital insurance and covers services such as inpatient hospital stays, hospice care and home health care.
Medicare Part B is your medical insurance, covering preventive and medically necessary services.
Original Medicare includes both Part A and Part B coverage.
Medicare Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage. To be eligible for Medicare Advantage, you must be enrolled in Original Medicare and you must continue to pay your Part B premium. Medicare Advantage can help you save on out-of-pocket-costs and often offers more benefits, such as dental and vision.
Medicare Part D is your prescription drug coverage, which is a beneficial, but ultimately optional plan. If you delay enrollment in a Part D plan or don’t have other creditable prescription drug coverage you could incur a penalty later.

To complicate things further, there are several combinations of these five plans that could make up your coverage.
